What is a GP and why should we all have one?

At Cornerstone Clinic, Grosvenor House, our aim is to provide an exceptional healthcare experience, building long-term relationships with our patients. Our state-of-the-art modern facilities provide a caring and sensitive environment for our patients and their families. We want you to feel safe and cared for from the moment you walk through the door. We use the latest evidence-based medical care coupled with the core traditions of general practice and believe that continuity of care is vital in achieving optimal health.

What is a general practitioner?

A general practitioner is your first point of call for diagnosis and treatment for your whole family, offering all-round care to patients of any age. GP’s have completed training in general practice and therefore have broad knowledge to treat all non-emergency healthcare concerns, with the focus being on preventative care. Your GP can also decide whether you need to see another health professional. If needed, they will give you a referral to see a specialist in a certain medical area or refer you to other health professionals who are specifically trained in your area of concern. Because GP’s get to know their patients over extended periods of time, often seeing them from birth to old age, they develop a keen understanding of you and your medical history. This helps them to make accurate diagnoses and monitor you more closely for any changes or red flags in your health screenings.

What services do general practitioners provide?

A family GP is able to diagnose and treat the vast majority of non-emergency conditions and should be your first point of contact for the following:

  • Acute illnesses such as fever, infections, colds/flu, migraines/headaches, and back pain
  • Advice on weight management
  • Cervical cancer screening for women

  • Children’s immunisations
