The Breast Augmentation Surgery

Comprehensive Guide to Different Types of Breast Implants

Breast implants can be saline or silicone and come in a number of shapes and sizes. Our surgeons usually recommend highly-cohesive silicon implants so if the implants are cut in half, the silicon remains safely within the casing. Manufacturers of these implants usually now provide lifetime warranties because of the quality. There are also a number of incision options which depend on factors including the size you’re aiming for plus choices on the placement of the implant too. Our surgeons will discuss every option with you at length prior to surgery and will evaluate your health and explain which surgical methods are best for you based on the conditions of your breasts and skin tone.

To help you visualize your possible new physique we can also use technology to show you how your breasts and silhouette will appear after the treatment.

ANAESTHESIA

Intravenous sedation is used during the process to ensure that there is no pain and that you are asleep throughout.

SURGERY TIMING

On average breast augmentation surgery lasts between 1 and 1.5 hours depending.

SURGERY

The breast surgery will take place in the hospital of your surgeon’s recommendation. This will depend on availability and the type of procedure being carried out. Our patients will return home the same day but our team our nurses and doctors will carry on the post-op care in our clinic.

PREPARATION

You will receive detailed instructions on how to get ready for surgery, including instructions on what to eat and drink, limitations on smoking, and whether or not to take certain vitamins and medications. In the week before your breast augmentation procedure, we advise you not to take any medications containing aspirin as they affect the blood clotting ability in the body as this will lead to excessive bleeding during the surgery. We also ask patients to avoid large amounts of garlic, alcohol and high doses of Vitamin E. If you’re a smoker, ensure that you stop at least 2 weeks before your surgery and don’t start again for at least 2 weeks thereafter as smoking constricts the blood vessels and capillaries affecting the overall healing process. Avoid overexposure to the sun, especially on the abdomen, and avoid astringent diets, since both can impair your ability to recover.

If you catch a cold or get an infection of any type, notify the surgeon immediately, since your operation may need to be rescheduled.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

You’re likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your breast augmentation surgery, particularly when the arms are moved, but you’ll be up and around and will return the same day after the surgery and will return to light routines within 24 to 48 hours. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by medication, which you will be given.

On the day of discharge, you will be given an information sheet and be asked to attend to have your dressing removed one week after the operation. At that appointment, the dressings will be removed by a nurse and the wound checked. You will then be permitted to shower but it is inadvisable to soak in the bath for at least 3 weeks. The stitches are removed at 2 weeks. You will be checked by your surgeons at various stages of the post-op recovery which will also include 1 month, 3 months or 6 months but any stage where there are concerns, your surgeon will see you to check.

Surgery can improve your body image and self-esteem but it is a big decision and one we want to help you make with confidence and with an understanding of your individual goals and circumstances.
