A Career Defined by Innovation, Teaching and Restraint

There is a particular kind of surgeon who is remembered not only for the operations he performed, but for the ones everybody else now performs because of him. Dr. Maurizio Viel is one of them.

He graduated in Medicine from the University of Milan and went to London to train in aesthetic plastic surgery — a decision that gave him what colleagues still describe as an unusual pairing: an Italian eye and a British discipline. He built his practice on Harley Street, worked between London and Milan, and for the past three decades has operated in Dubai, where he is Co-Founder of Cornerstone Clinic.

Technique is the easy part. Knowing when not to operate — that takes thirty years.

The defining moment of his career came with an ultrasound. In the early days of body contouring, liposuction was a blunt instrument. It worked, but it traumatised blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue around the treatment area, and recovery could be punishing. When VASER arrived, using ultrasound to break down fat cells selectively while preserving surrounding tissue, most surgeons watched. Dr. Viel introduced it to Europe, and then to the UAE.

VASER did not simply improve an operation; it changed what body contouring could reasonably promise. It offered less bruising and downtime, with definition where there had previously been only reduction. Dr. Viel then spent the second half of the story teaching the technique. He has lectured at leading aesthetic and plastic surgery congresses, served as a trainer for Dysport® across Europe and the Middle East, and worked as a Key Opinion Leader for Stylage® by Vivacy. He has mentored surgeons who went on to build practices of their own.

A technique you keep to yourself dies with you. A technique you teach outlives you.

He is also, unusually for a surgeon, a writer. As Co-Author of The Viel Beauty Bible, he helped explain cosmetic procedures plainly: what they involve, what they can and cannot do, and how patients can make informed decisions.

Ask his patients what distinguishes him and innovation rarely comes up first. What comes up is restraint. In a market that rewards the obvious, Dr. Viel has built a thirty-year reputation on results that do not announce themselves. His breast augmentation work is especially sought out by women who want refinement rather than transformation — an approach organised around proportion, balance and the anatomy of the individual rather than a trend.

The same instinct governs his facial work, body contouring and consultations. The question he is known for asking is not simply what a patient would like done, but what they actually want. Those are not always the same question, and the distance between them is where a good outcome is found.

Patients travel to see him from across the UAE, the GCC, Europe and beyond — some for surgery and some for a second opinion. A significant proportion are referred by other doctors.

On Sundays, he cooks for his family, usually risotto alla Milanese — a dish that cannot be hurried. Stock goes in one ladle at a time; what makes it is the saffron and knowing how little of it to use. It is an apt expression of the patience and restraint that define his clinical philosophy.

More than thirty years into his career, Dr. Viel is still operating, teaching and participating in international congresses. He entered aesthetic surgery at a moment when the field was deciding what kind of medicine it wanted to be. He helped it decide — and then he went home and made dinner.
