Cosmetic Procedures: Perfection, Weight Loss, and the “Botox Face” | Dr Maurizio Viel | Cornerstone Clinic | Dubai

In today’s blog, Dr Maurizio Viel, an Italian plastic surgeon at Cornerstone Clinic, Dubai, talks about the addiction to reaching perfection, the famous ‘botox face’, new weight loss procedures and how AI is used within the aesthetic field.

ADDICTION TO PERFECTION- IS IT TRUE?

The idea of the addiction to perfection is a total myth – as this is not the case for most of the patients who come for aesthetic procedures at Cornerstone Clinic. We all see the 10% of patients that this could happen to, but it’s not every patient. The 10% of patients that would be inclined to reach perfection would have been obsessed with this ‘goal’ because it is already in their nature, whether it has to do with appearance, fashion sense, hair, etc., so it would be something that they reach for in other aspects of their life too.

Most of the patients I have seen during my career are normal, sensible, rational human beings trying to be the best version of themselves, whether it is not to wrinkle on their forehead or to fix their breasts. Doing one procedure does not always lead them to do more. Many of my patients do that one surgery that bothers them, like liposuction of their tummy, and that’s it. Yes, the good results make patients trust you, and they may explore one or two other treatments, but they don’t suddenly seek perfection.

The bad work, oversized lips, or overdone patients is not generally due to the patient but it has more to do with their doctors’ inability to say no to overdoing. Unfortunately, good work is subtle, bad work is more obvious so it scares people.

WEIGHT LOSS PROCEDURES TO HELP WITH SAGGING SKIN

With the spreading of quick ways to lose weight, such as Ozempic, which has caused a great deal of weight loss, loss of muscle mass and loss of volume especially to the face. Patients have started to age much faster with these rapid weight loss methods, and therefore search ways to address the excessive sagging skin. Often, we have to inject fillers to bring back the youthful contours, other patients have opted for body lifts because of the amount of saggy skin, or brachioplasty (arm surgery) to cut the excess skin.

For less severe cases, we use the Endo ThermaDAS that uses internal radiofrequency to tighten the skin with which we have seen great results. The Endo ThermaDAS is an Italian technology used to help tighten the skin. It is usually used in the stage before a face lift and typically suits patients in their late 30s and early 40s, but it also does depends on genetics and lifestyle, so it is important to discuss with your doctor if you could benefit from this procedure.

THE BOTOX FACE

What is the Botox face? It is commonly used to address those who have ‘lost’ their natural features by overdoing botox and fillers, so much that they all seem to have the same facial features (small nose, big lips, foxy eyes, high cheekbones, etc). Why does this happen? This is simple, it’s bad work from doctors that perform these procedures. There are some celebrities that look wonderful with the same treatments and some that look worse. Demi Moore is someone who has worked well with plastic surgery – she looks like a great version of herself giving her great confidence to stay in her industry. What most people don’t understand is that botox and fillers is an art, it’s about proportions on the face. If you give 10 photographers the same subject, the results would be different. Often, people think that by going cheap with plastic surgery you get the same results. In fact, you couldn’t be further from the truth. We have constantly tried to educate patients to learn about the treatments before trying them. Always find a doctor who is willing to say no.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND AESTHETIC MEDICINE

Whilst AI is working its way into the industry, it’s still not 100% there. We now have great 3D softwares that can look at the entire structure of the face built both by camera and AI technology – this helps us analyse skin, the pigmentation and vascular sytem. It can overlay before and after pictures to note changes and improvements post-treatment. That has been a game changer.

Notably for breast augmentation, we use virtual technology to provide before and after scenarios that patients can experience. The patients can choose a variety of sizes and this is then placed along their body size in the virtual reality model. This really helps patients consider their choices more effectively.
