FAQs on Mole Removal | Dr Maurizio Viel & Dr Ruhil Badiani| Cornerstone Clinic | Dubai

Moles are those small pigmented spots on the skin that are very common amongst both men and women. Generally, moles are harmless; however, sometimes they can become bothersome due to their appearance or location. It is important to know that moles can be distinguished as non-cancerous, cancerous, or borderline. Non-cancerous or benign moles can be easily removed at the clinic in a few minutes with no downtime, as the procedure is painless and non-invasive.

It is necessary to have your moles checked out by professionals to determine whether they can be safely removed or if they need further analysis. Moles can vary in size, shape, and colour; therefore, monitoring them for any changes is essential, as these could be signs of skin cancer.

What does the mole removal procedure entail?

The procedure to remove benign non-cancerous moles involves using plasma energy to vaporise the mole layer by layer in various body locations with extreme precision. A small hand-held device emits plasma energy, which is a kind of highly charged gas that only targets the mole, more specifically the pigmented cells that make up the mole, and remove it. The process is not painful, however, some numbing cream can be applied to alleviate any discomfort. The entire process does not take long and you may get back to your daily routine immediately after.

Do I need to see a General Practitioner before?

Yes, assessing if the mole is cancerous or non-cancerous is necessary before deciding which procedure is best suited for the removal. A dermatologist as well as a GP can check if the mole can be safely removed with plasma energy by carefully assessing its appearance. It can be useful for us to be aware of the ABCDE rule to monitor our spots over a period of time to see if there have been any significant changes that could be compatible with melanoma. The ABCDE rule stands for:

  • Asymmetry: if one half of the spot is asymmetrical to the other half
  • Border: if the border is irregular or if it poorly defined
  • Colour: if there are multiple colours present from one area to the next such as brown, tan and black
  • Diameter: if the diameter of the spot starts to change over time
  • Evolution: if the spot starts changing from when you first notice its appearance. These changes can be in colour, shape or size

It is important to remember that this rule is just for self-examination and it does not substitute the intervention of a qualified doctor, and therefore it is necessary to have a professional look at the spots or moles with a specific tool because early detection and treatment is the key in skin cancer prevention.

Does the procedure hurt?

If the moles or spots are safe to be removed with plasma energy, the procedure is minimally invasive, and generally does not hurt. The doctor can provide numbing cream to make the procedure more comfortable for you if there is any discomfort.

Will there be scarring?

Plasma energy is used to remove the mole, precisely targeting it and making it quickly disappear layer by layer without damaging the surrounding skin. This method is known for its high precision and minimal scarring. Some redness may occur after the removal, but it will subside soon, and the area will heal with no visible scars.
