HYPERHIDROSIS – EXCESSIVE SWEATING

Hyperhidrosis is a condition where the body’s glands overproduce sweat. This

usually occurs on the hands, feet and armpit areas. This excessive sweating can be

uncomfortable and embarrassing. This is usually a genetic condition that starts

from a young age and affects 2%–5% of the population.

For most individuals, hyperhidrosis isn’t typically a serious health concern. For many, hyperhidrosis isn’t usually a significant health risk. Nonetheless, it can cause discomfort and embarrassment and disrupt daily life. One of the most effective and safe treatments is Botox. When Botox is injected into the face for wrinkles, it generally lasts only three months, but for the armpits, hands, and feet, it can last up to one year, making it a worthwhile treatment. Countless celebrities also turn to this treatment for red-carpet evenings to ensure that they do not sweat into their gowns.

HOW DO BOTOX INJECTIONS EFFECTIVELY TREAT SWEATING?

Botox injections function by blocking the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which typically activates sweat glands. Under normal circumstances, the nervous system triggers the sweat glands in response to rising body temperature, aiding in cooling the body. However, in individuals with hyperhidrosis, these nerves are excessively active.

When Botox is administered directly to the area prone to sweating, it essentially immobilises the overactive nerves. As a result, without the signal from these nerves, sweat production is inhibited. It’s important to note that Botox only affects sweating in the specific area where it is injected.

Armpits

This treatment can be performed using anaesthetic cream for the armpits. The injections are done 1 cm apart in the armpit area. The results start showing quickly, with full results showing after two weeks. The treatment overall takes around one hour.

Hands and Feet

Usually, this treatment is done under light sedation. The feet and hands are extremely sensitive and uncomfortable, and anaesthetic cream usually does not work. The treatment should take 30 minutes for the hands and 30 minutes for the feet.

However, it’s important to note that Botox isn’t a permanent fix for excessive underarm sweating. While a single treatment provides relief for approximately 4–12 months, ongoing injections are necessary to maintain results.
