At Cornerstone, we emphasise the importance of preventive care for optimal digestive health. Our colonoscopy services are designed to detect and prevent colorectal issues, ensuring your well-being through comprehensive and compassionate care.

Understanding the Importance of Colonoscopy for Your Health

Colonoscopy is an essential tool in both the prevention and early detection of colorectal diseases, including colorectal cancer. This important procedure allows our experienced healthcare team to meticulously inspect the inner lining of the colon, identifying and proactively managing concerns like polyps or inflammation.

Commitment to Your Comfort and Safety

At Cornerstone, we recognise that undergoing a colonoscopy may cause apprehension. Our team is committed to ensuring your comfort, safety, and well-being at every stage of the procedure.

What to Expect During a Colonoscopy

Detailed Preparation:

You will be guided through a preparation process for your colon, including specific dietary guidelines and a gentle bowel-cleansing routine.

Sedation for Comfort:

You will receive sedation during the colonoscopy for a pain-free experience. Our team will closely monitor your vital signs to maintain your safety.

Conducting the Colonoscopy:

A thin, flexible tube with a camera (colonoscope) is carefully inserted into the colon via the rectum. This enables our specialists to examine the colon comprehensively and identify any irregularities.

Polyp Removal and Biopsy:

If polyps or abnormal tissues are found, they can often be removed on the spot. We may also collect tissue samples for further analysis.

Recovery After the Procedure:

You will rest in our recovery area post-procedure until the effects of sedation diminish. Our team will discuss the results with you and provide aftercare instructions.

When to Consider a Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is recommended for:

– Adults over 40 as a routine screening

– Those with a family history of colorectal problems

– Individuals with a personal history of colorectal diseases.

– Anyone experiencing symptoms like bowel habit changes, rectal bleeding, or abdominal pain.

  1. Screening for Colorectal Cancer: Colonoscopy is a key tool for detecting colorectal cancer early when it’s most treatable. Many medical guidelines suggest starting screening at age 45 or 50 for people at average risk, but your doctor might suggest earlier or more frequent screening based on your risk factors.
  2. Investigating Intestinal Symptoms: If you’re experiencing symptoms such as unexplained changes in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, persistent abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss, a colonoscopy can help diagnose the cause, which could range from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to polyps or cancer.
  3. Monitoring and Surveillance: For individuals with a history of polyps, colorectal cancer, or chronic conditions like Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s Disease, colonoscopies are used to monitor the colon and rectum for changes or to check for the recurrence of polyps or cancer.
  4. Polyp Removal: During a colonoscopy, doctors can identify and remove polyps, which are growths on the lining of the colon or rectum. Some polyps can develop into cancer over time, so removing them is a preventive measure.
  5. Diagnostic Clarification: If other tests, such as a CT scan, MRI, or stool tests, suggest abnormalities, a colonoscopy can provide a direct look inside the colon and rectum to confirm a diagnosis.

Our qualified team will provide you with an information pack to help with the bowel preparation.  We ask our patients to follow our instructions carefully to ensure an empty bowel before undergoing the procedure.

Most patients receive sedation or anaesthesia to help them relax and minimise discomfort during the procedure, making the experience more tolerable. Most people report little to no discomfort after the procedure, while others may experience temporary bloating, pressure, or mild cramping.

The colonoscopy procedure itself usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes. It may take longer if any polyps need to be removed.

Initial findings can often be discussed after the procedure, with biopsy results, if applicable, typically available within a few days.
