How long does breast augmentation take?

The surgery takes usually one hour but there are varying factors that could lengthen the process.

What is the recovery time after the breast augmentation?

Patients return home the same after the surgery and they can patient carry out light activities from walking to the bathroom and back but should rest in the first 24 – 48 hours. If you are a mum, best not to hug your little ones too much as the breasts will be sore.  Activities depend and vary from patient to patient especially with pain tolerance.  You are able to drive after 48 hours.  Most patients return back to work after 3 – 4 days.  We strictly advise our patients not to raise their hands above the heads to avoid scar stretching for up to a month.  Our team will also provide a list of dos and don’ts after the breast surgery.

Will breast augmentation leave any scars?

For Dr Maurizio Viel, he makes incisions in the breast fold.  For more patients, these scars fade over time and they are 3 – 4 cm in the fold so they are in a subtle position.  Dr Maurizio will often employ techniques to minimise scarring and he also uses special suturing techniques. After a month, when patients are able to swim, you are able to wear swim wear and not see any scars as they are discreetly placed.

Can I breastfeed after getting breast implants?

In most cases, yes.  Breast implants do not interfere with breast feeding as your breast tissue is left untouched.  Implants are usually placed on top of the muscle but under the breast tissue in a specially created pocket.  However, it’s important to discuss this during your consultation.

What are the risks associated with breast augmentation.

Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries certain risks.  These can include infection, bleeding, reaction to anaesthesia or capsular contracture.  The latter will require revision surgery as the body is reacting to the implants.

How long do breast implants last?

In the past, breast implants has a shelf life of around 10 years.  These days high quality breast implants have a lifetime warranty.

What type of implants are used?

Technology for breast implants have come a long way in the last two decades.  On the market, there are now breast implants made from cohesive silicon gel.  These are soft to touch and perfect contoured to give a great shape.  The great advantage is when the implants are cut in half, the silicon gel remains within its casing so there are no fears of leakage.  As a result, the manufacturers of these high quality implants will now offer lifetime warranty of the implants.

Will breast implants affect mammogram screenings?

There are special techniques used by the mammogram technician so please ensure you inform them during the process so that accurate results can be obtained.  You should also be aware if the implants have been placed under the muscle or on top of the muscle as they will use different methods for this.

Can I boost the size and shape of my breast implants?

Are there non-surgical alternatives to breast augmentation?

In some cases, the patient’s fat can be used to create more volume in the breast known as fat-grafting.  However, it is limited to one cup size only.  Some patients prefer this instead of implants.  We do not recommend fillers for the breast area.
