If you have been considering breast augmentation, you might have some questions surrounding the whole procedure that could make you take the final leap. Our plastic surgeon, Dr Maurizio Viel, answers the most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation surgery, from scarring to the types of implants used. Read on to learn more about the procedure and have more clarity around this topic.
Breast augmentation surgery is usually not a very long procedure. The timing depends on many factors that could lengthen the procedure, and the doctor will discuss it with you beforehand, but usually, the surgery takes around 1 hour or 1.5 hours.
Patients return home the same day after the surgery, and all the after operation care will be carried out at our clinic. The patient can carry out simple activities straight after surgery which include light walking but should generally rest in the first 24 – 48 hours post operation. Other activities depend and vary from patient to patient especially when it comes to pain tolerance. You are, however, able to drive after 48 hours. Most patients will return back to work after 3 – 4 days. We strictly advise our patients not to raise their hands above the heads to avoid the fresh scar from stretching for up to a month after the surgery. Overall, our team and I will also provide a list of do’s and don’ts after breast augmentation surgery.
The method used to minimise scarring is making the incision on the breast fold/crease, around 3 or 4 cm in length, which make it the perfect position for a very subtle scar that will allow it to heal and become very discreet over time. Scarring also depends of the type of suturing that will be used, and in this case, to minime the scars, a special suturing technique will be preferred.
In most cases, yes, it is possibile to breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery. Breast implants do not interfere with breast feeding as your breast tissue is left untouched. Implants are usually placed on top of the muscle and under the breast tissue in a specifically-created pocket, however, it’s important to discuss this during your consultation wiht the plastic surgeon.
Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation can be prone to certain risks. These risks can include infection, bleeding, reaction to anaesthesia or capsular contracture. The latter will require revision surgery as the body is reacting to the implants. These risks are however minimised if all the appropriate aftercare is followed and if you choose a qualified plastic surgeon to perform the surgery.
In the past, breast implants had a shelf life of around 10 years which would then require a second surgery to replace the old implants. Nowadays high quality breast implants tend to have a lifetime warranty so it will be less likely to have the implants replaced.
Technology for breast implants have come a long way in the last two decades. Breast implants can be saline or silicone and come in a number of shapes and sizes. Our surgeons usually recommend highly-cohesive silicon implants so if the implants are cut in half, the silicon remains safely within the casing. Manufacturers of these implants usually now provide lifetime warranties because of the quality.
There are special techniques used by the mammogram technician so please ensure you inform them during the process that you have had breast augmentation surgery so that accurate results can be obtained. You should also be aware of the positioning of the implants, such as if the they have been placed under the muscle or on top of the muscle as the technicians will use different methods to accomodate this.
Yes, these are important points that should and must be discussed during the consultation with the qualified surgeon. The desired outcome will be discussed as well as using a 3D breast simulation to give an indication of what you will look like with difference shapes and sizes. The key to getting the perfect physique is to create natural looking breasts that aesthetically suit and are tailored to a particular body type.
In some cases, the patient’s fat can be used to create more volume in the breast known as fat-grafting. However, it is limited to one cup size only and some patients prefer this instead of implants.
