10 things to know about breast augmentation surgery
When considering surgery of any kind, the most important part of that decision is choosing the right surgeon. For breast augmentation, there are certain criteria you should look for. Firstly, your surgeon should be board-certified. The right cosmetic surgeons have undergone rigorous training and education and then passed an in-depth examination. This exam tests their knowledge of plastic surgery and evaluates their skills. Secondly, your surgeon should be highly experienced, especially in breast augmentation. You can ask to see before-and-after pictures of previous patients as well as testimonials. Most surgeons these days will also have an online presence, so be sure to check for social media pages highlighting their expertise.
There are different types of implants available; the most common ones you will have heard of are silicone and gel implants. However, a new favourite with our surgeons at Cornerstone Clinic Dubai is the gummy bear implant. The gummy bear implant is the 5th generation of breast implants and is a vast improvement over the previous saline and silicone versions. This is because the gummy bear implants are shape-retentive and therefore much less likely to rupture. Your surgeon will, of course, discuss all options with you, taking into account the size and shape you are looking to achieve.
Bigger is not always better. When choosing the size of your breast implant, it is important to consider your body frame, height, weight, shoulder width, hip width, and current breast volume to know if the size will be aesthetically pleasing. Also, women who have a sturdy frame can carry a larger breast implant, whereas women with smaller or more delicate frames may suffer back pain if the implant is too big. Implants are permanent, so have an in-depth discussion with your surgeon, who will be able to help you decide on the right size implant for your body and personal goals. At Cornerstone Clinic, we also use 3D simulation to help our patients visualise the different shaped implants and sizes.
Breast implants may be placed above or below your chest muscle. The placement depends on the patient’s natural body type and how much breast tissue is available to cover the implant. Some patients prefer under-the-muscle placement to achieve a natural look and feel. Placement above the muscle provides more of a lifting effect, and a larger breast implant can be used. Dr Maurizio Viel will be able to advise you on which option is most suitable for your body shape and overall goals.
It is possible to combine a breast lift and augmentation for optimum results. A breast lift helps patients with sagging breasts, loose skin, or downward-pointing nipples, but it does not increase the size of the breast; in fact, most patients will see a reduction in the size of their breasts after the procedure. On the flip side, breast augmentation on its own may not correct excessively loose or sagging skin. Combining these two treatments can provide the size, shape, and perkier look patients are looking for.
Not being able to breastfeed is a common concern among women considering breast augmentation surgery. In a vast majority of cases, women with breast implants can breastfeed if they have functional glandular tissue, the milk duct network has not been damaged, and the breast implants do not put too much pressure on the breast tissue. It is important to note that some women may experience issues with breastfeeding even if they do not have breast implants. In other words, breastfeeding is not guaranteed, with or without breast implants. At the consultation stage, your surgeon will discuss if you are planning to breastfeed so that all of the above can be taken into consideration during your procedure.
Another concern for patients undergoing breast augmentation is whether they will lose the sensation of their nipples. Although most patients experience some degree of change in sensitivity during the healing process, which can be either heightened or dulled. In most cases, these changes will diminish in the weeks and months following your surgery as swelling subsides and incisions heal.
Your surgeon will provide you with detailed instructions for your postoperative care, and it is important to follow them to achieve the best possible results. The time it takes to recover will be different for every patient depending on the extent of the surgery they have undergone, but in general, most patients take around 6 weeks to recover. It is advisable to have someone available to help you for the first few days after your procedure, and you should prepare your home in advance so that you have a comfortable resting place and all the essentials you need. Healthy food will help your body recover quicker, and you may want to stock up on over-the-counter pain medication in case it is required after your prescribed medication runs out.
Although there will be a visible difference in the size and shape of your breasts immediately after surgery, remember that your breasts will be very swollen, bruised, and firm. It takes time for your skin to stretch and your implants to settle. Realistically, it can take up to three to four months before you are able to see your final results.
Breast augmentation provides long-term results, and advancements in the types of implants available mean they can, in many cases, remain in good shape for 20 years or more. It is important to note, however, that age, weight gain, and pregnancy can alter the shape of your breasts. With the ‘gummy bear’ implants, the manufacturers now give a lifetime warranty because of the good quality.
