Botox is very well known for its cosmetic use in smoothing facial wrinkles and fine lines by temporarily relaxing muscles. Not many know that there are other uses for Botox, such as its therapeutic potential to alleviate conditions such as hyperhidrosis—a condition characterised by excessive and abnormal sweating.
Individuals who suffer from hyperhidrosis have hyperactive sweat glands, which result in excessive sweating unrelated to physical activity or a rise in temperature. Excessive sweating affects areas like the palms, armpits, soles of the feet, chest, and face. For most individuals, hyperhidrosis isn’t typically a serious health concern, but it can be the cause of discomfort and embarrassment when in public.
Botox injections block the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which activates sweat glands. Under normal circumstances, the nervous system triggers the sweat glands in response to rising body temperature to help cool the body. However, in individuals that suffer from hyperhidrosis, these nerves are excessively active. When Botox is administered directly into the area prone to sweating, in this case the underarm, it immobilises the overactive nerves and as a result, sweat production is inhibited.
The duration of the benefits depend on the area that is being treated, however, typically the effects last up to 6 months. After undergoing the non-invasive procedure of injecting Botox in the underarm, patients will be able to see results within 2–4 days after the treatment, with full effects becoming apparent within 2 weeks. It is important to remember that this is not a permanent solution, therefore to maintain results, it is recommended to repeat the injections over time.
