Botox: things to know

Botox has become a staple non-surgical procedure, and is known to help with and prevent natural wrinkling process. Here are some answers to the things that might have kept you wondering, from what botox does to what to expect and for how long the effects would last.

What is botox?

Botox, or Botulinum toxin, is a purified protein which inhibits the nerve impulse to the muscle, causing immobilisation of the muscle of interest. This, when applied to the facial muscles, results in the inability to move them and so, prevents you from wrinkling the affected area.

What are the uses of botox?

Botox is well-known for the ability to improve the ability of wrinkling, as described above. It can also be injected to the forehead and the back of the head to prevent migraines. Moreover, it can reduce sweating if injected to hands, feet or armpits by inhibiting the sweat glands, in addition to many potential cosmetic and non-cosmetic uses under research.

What happens at the appointment?

The specialist would ask you about the concern that brought you to botox and study the affected area to see where the botox incisions would be helpful. Then the area would be cleaned, and the botox preparation of the concentration calculated specifically for your concern would be injected precisely to the areas of interest. Overall, the whole procedure would take approximately 15-30 minutes, and is relatively low-risk. There is a possibility of bruising and a red marks at the areas of injection which would disappear soon after the treatment.

How long does it take for the full effect to be observed?

While this depends on the area of injection, the full effect would be observed within 7-10 days.

How long does the effect last?

This depends from person to person, as well as on the area of injection. When applied to face, the results would generally last for up to 6 months, but this period would be shorter depending on expressiveness, level of activity and individual differences. However, when targeting oversweating, the effects generally last longer, with up to 1 year before requiring to repeat the treatment.

Interestingly, the repeated treatments modify the regular patterns of activity, meaning that the regularity of the treatment might act as a prevention of the further adverse developments, increasing the interval between the treatments and preventing new adverse developments from forming.
