Do my breast implants need replacing?
One question our surgeons are often asked is: do my breast implants need replacing? If you have had your implants for over 10 years, then the answer to this question could be yes. For the vast majority of patients, breast implants can last ten years or longer without any complications. It is advisable however, to have regular check-ups with your surgeon as older styles of breast implants were not designed for life.
In this article we will look at some of the reasons why you might need to replace your breast implants, the signs to look out for and the most recent introduction to breast augmentations, the gummy bear implant.
Why do breast implants need replacing?
As mentioned above, older style implants need to be replaced after 10 or 15 years. It is found that the longer someone has them, the more likely they are to experience complications. The main reasons your breast implants may need to be replaced are as follows:
Aside from the above, the natural aging process, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations can all affect the size and projection of the breasts and replacing implants may be able to address these changes in appearance.
What to look out for:
While some complications may be visibly obvious, such as a ruptured implant, others may be more difficult to identify. Below are some of the signs that indicate your breast implant may have an issue and needs to be replaced:
If you are experiencing any of the above, then contact your surgeon right away.
The gummy bear implants
The good news is that breast augmentations have evolved in recent years, and one new introduction is the gummy bear implant.
Gummy bear breast implants have both a silicone shell and a silicone gel filling. Their advantage, compared with other silicone implants, is that gummy bear implants retain their shape but also leave the breasts naturally soft to the touch.
The term “gummy bear” is a nickname for these gel-based implants. They’re known to retain their shape better than other types of breast implants made from saline and silicone.
In the past, breast implants carried a greater risk of rupture and related complications. When ruptured, silicon or saline material could ooze out of the shell and into the surrounding tissue.
Due to their strength, gummy bear implants are less likely to rupture and leak compared with other silicone gel and saline forms.
