Breast Augmentation is the second most popular surgery in the world according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons after liposuction performed in 2022.
Breast Augmentation often referred by patients at the ‘Boob job’ is a popular procedure that usually involves breast implants or fat transfer. In today’s piece we will talk about implants with our cosmetic surgeon, Dr Maurizio Viel.
Dr Maurizio Viel
Dr Maurizio Viel has over 30 years of cosmetic surgery experience, in Italy, Norway, Ireland, UK, and has done thousands of breast augmentations. ‘We never economise or budget to choose the best breast implants for patient safety. Currently, we use Motiva implants that are made with highly cohesive silicon that is safe that the manufactures provide lifetime warranties on the implants,’ says Dr Viel.
Natural looking results
‘Our patients chase natural looking results, it’s a media fad that breast augmentation has to big, large and heavy looking. That’s untrue that patients want large breasts as 90% of our patients want natural looking breasts usually after pregnancy or even if they are A or B cup sizes. The smallest implants can be 175cc which increases by 1 cup size. The choice should be the patients,’ tells Dr Maurizio. ‘It’s all about balance and aesthetics and I take into consideration the patient’s body proportions, height, weight and shape of the patient, and try to enhance their breasts that suits their body.’ Dr Maurizio Viel also emphasises how important it is to listen to the patient but also to explain the risks, benefits and pain levels to the patients so they are mentally and physically prepared.
3D Simulation for breast augmentation
Dr Viel says, ‘To give patients an indication of what their breasts might look like, we work with a technology company that takes a photo of the breasts. The patients that wear a 3D simulator and they get to experiment with different implants, sizes and shapes to see what they might be comfortable with. We also let the patients bring the recording home to share with a family member or friend to get their opinion too. Whilst these are only indications, it allows the patients to visualise a little.’
Breast Implants
Dr Maurizio believes that good results require good quality implants. ‘Like a proper chef requires proper ingredients, it’s the same in plastic surgery. It’s surprising when patients choose prices and budget treatments in some medical tourist destinations only to find that terrible quality implants have been used with no serial number or warranty.’ Breast implant technology has advanced now and the highest quality implants use highly cohesive silicon gel. What does this mean? When you cut the implants, the silicon gel remains within the casing preventing leaks. The implants are so good that their own manufacturers provide lifetime warranties on them. Some even have microchip in the implants so future doctors can scan to obtain the details.
Consultation
Dr Maurizio Viel always says that the surgery should be done for you, the patient, and not for anyone else. Have an idea of what you are looking for and also listen to what the surgeon might suggest. If you still have questions, ask to meet the cosmetic surgeon again so that you are comfortable with them. Check which implants are being used and ensure they are of good quality because a good surgeon is a transparent surgeon.
