Demystifying The Hantavirus with Dr Negin Hakim | Cornerstone Clinic | Dubai

The recent hantavirus case linked to a cruise ship has naturally made headlines worldwide. When a rare virus is mentioned in the news, it is completely normal to wonder: Are we at risk?  Dr Negin Hakim, general practitioner at Cornerstone Clinic, breaks down the facts. The short answer is reassuring: the risk of a wider outbreak across the Arab region remains exceptionally low.

The risk of widespread transmission in the Middle East is minimal due to several limiting factors:

  • Inefficient Human-to-Human Transmission: The vast majority of hantavirus strains worldwide cannot spread from person to person. Even the specific Andes virus strain involved in the cruise incident—the only hantavirus known to occasionally spread between humans—does so very inefficiently

  • Close Contact is Necessary: For the Andes virus to pass between individuals, prolonged contact is needed for it to spread. It does not spread through casual encounters in public spaces or everyday interactions

  • Contagiousness Appears Later On: Unlike viruses that spread before anyone feels sick, hantavirus patients become most infectious much later in their illness, once they are already showing symptoms. By that point, patients are typically isolating or already receiving medical care

  • No Local Environmental Loop: To survive long-term, the virus relies on a highly specific environmental cycle. The rodent carriers of the Andes strain are native to parts of South America, not the Middle East. Without these specific local hosts, an imported case cannot establish a permanent presence here

  • Post-COVID Systems: The Gulf and wider Arab region boast highly advanced public health infrastructure. Airport surveillance, infectious disease notification networks, hospital isolation facilities, and rapid contact-tracing protocols are all locked and loaded to catch and contain imported risks immediately.

Hantavirus is a serious medical condition, but its biological limitations combined with our region’s medical defences mean the risk of a widespread outbreak is basically near zero. However, it is important to stay informed and rely on trustworthy news and informations.
