Breast augmentation, along with liposuction, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed worldwide, and with advancements in technology, it is now safer, simpler, and offers the most natural-looking results than ever before.
We speak to Italian cosmetic surgeon Dr. Maurizio Viel at Cornerstone Clinic Dubai, who explained more about the breast augmentation procedure.
What type of breast implant do you like to use, and why?
I am a great believer in natural looking results – that’s what 90% of my patients want. The implant I most commonly use when performing breast augmentation for my patients is the Motivation Implant, also known as the ‘gummy bear implant’. Motiva implants are a unique new form of breast implant that uses a highly cohesive, high-strength silicone gel to keep their shape. The Motiva implant is the 5th generation of breast implants and is a vast improvement on the previous saline and silicone versions. This is because they are shape-retentive and therefore much less likely to rupture. They are smooth and safe, and when inserted over the muscle, they offer the most natural looking results.
How do you decide what size and shape of breast implant to use?
At Cornerstone Clinic in Dubai, we use Crisalix 3D imaging technology to help you decide on the size and shape you want. The 3D imaging technology produces anatomically accurate 3D images of how you will look before and after your surgery, taking into account many factors such as size, shape, type of implant, and any reconstructive surgery you may need. It works by taking your photos and replicating your body in 3D, which can be viewed from every angle. These 3D images can then be modified, illustrating how you will look with different types, shapes, and sizes of implants to help you achieve your desired results.
How is the surgery performed?
The breast augmentation surgery takes place at a hospital in Dubai under sedation – this is not to be confused with general anaesthesia. Once you are sedated, I will make an incision in the breast tissue to create a pocket for the implant, usually above the breast tissue, for the most natural-looking results. I will then carefully insert and adjust the implant to ensure it is positioned correctly. Finally, the incision will be closed with sutures, and sterile dressings will be applied. The whole procedure can usually be performed within an hour, and within 3–4 hours, you can leave the clinic. You will then need to rest for a few days, but you can usually return to normal activities within about 48 hours of your surgery. You will also need to wear a special support bra for several weeks to help the breasts heal and settle into their new shape.
What is the recovery process for breast augmentation in Dubai?
During my initial consultation with my patient at Cornerstone Clinic, I will give detailed instructions for their postoperative care, which are important to follow to achieve the best results. The time it takes to recover will vary from person to person depending on the extent of the surgery they have undergone, but in general, most patients take around 6 weeks to recover. The new breast implants may sit a little high in the first few weeks; that is very normal. Patients should also expect to experience some swelling, and the breast may appear hard immediately after surgery. This will subside after 4 to 6 weeks as the implants start to soften and drop into their natural shape.
