Q&A Treatment for Varicose Veins | Dr Vincenzo di Donna | Cornerstone Clinic | Dubai

Treatment for Varicose Veins in Dubai

Varicose veins can be painful, itchy, and cause us to be self-conscious about our appearance. Traditionally, various veins could only be treated with surgery. However, there are now multiple non-invasive treatment options available with minimal downtime needed, meaning you can return to your normal daily activities almost immediately.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are a common medical condition more often found in women than men. This may be due to the fact that various veins can be caused by hormone imbalances during pregnancy and menopause. Most patients develop varicose veins in their legs, however varicosities can form anywhere in the body. Varicose veins are caused by elevated blood pressure and contributing factors to this are sitting or standing for long periods of time, weight gain, pregnancy, and aging. Varicose veins can also be hereditary, so if there is a history of the condition in your family, then you may be more susceptible.

What Are the Symptoms of Varicose Veins?

Some patients have no symptoms, whereas others may experience the following:

  • Enlarged, bulging veins with a twisted shape
  • Swelling and achiness in the legs and ankles
  • A heavy feeling in the legs that worsens at night
  • Development of spider veins near the varicosity
  • Hardened fat deposits near the skin’s surface
  • Blue or brown-coloured skin on the calves and ankles
  • Itchy skin or leg ulcers that are slow to heal
  • Tightness and cramping in calves, especially when walking

What treatments are available for various veins in Dubai?

Our qualified doctor, Dr Vincenzo Di Donna, will assess your individual needs and advise on the best treatment option for you. Our aim is to always use the most minimally invasive treatment possible so you can return to your usual daily activities as quickly as possible.

Treatment options include:

  • Sclerotherapy – injecting a sclerosant liquid or foam to close the vein
  • Ablаtіоn – applying laser or thermal energy like radiofrequency to eliminate diseased veins
  • Elevation your legs over your heart while resting
  • Compression stockings
  • Surgery – phlebectomy (surgically stripping the veins from the body)

What aftercare is needed for treatment of varicose veins?

The recovery process is individual for each patient and will depend on the treatment received. You will be supplied with full aftercare instructions by your surgeon prior to your treatment commencing. Typically, a patient will be able to return to normal daily activities within a few days, and in simpler cases, just hours. You will be given compression stockings to wear for up to 2 weeks (during the second week, you can take these off at night); and it is recommended that you avoid any long-haul flights for 6 weeks. After 8 weeks, you will then need to return for a follow-up appointment to check the healing and results of your treatment.
