May is Skin Cancer Awareness month. A month dedicated to the prevention, monitoring and screening of skin cancer, primarily because the incidence of these types of cancers is rapidly rising worldwide among individuals. At Cornerstone Clinic, Dubai Marina, we take prevention very seriously. Our dermatologist, Dr Victoria Scott-Lang, will be sharing helpful insights on preventing skin cancer and the signs to look out for before seeking professional help throughout the whole month of May.
The 3 types of skin cancers, in order of how common they are, that Dr Victoria Scott-Lang wants you to be aware of:
1. BCC (Basal Cell Carcinoma)
This is a very common type of skin cancer amongst the population and fortunately, it is the least aggressive of skin cancers. It can be treated surgically or non surgically via the use for topica chemotherapy creams or cryotherapy.
3. SCC (Squamous Cell Carcinoma)
Frequently seen in the elderly, above the age of 70, and those who have worked outside in the sun most of their lives. SCC usually appears on sun-exposed skin (face, ears, neck, hands) as a firm red bump, a scaly patch, or a non-healing wound. Non-melanoma skin cancers (like BCC and SCC) are incredibly prevalent, particularly in individuals with light skin, hair, and eyes, or those over 50.
3. Melanoma
Fortunately, this is not very common to see in Dubai, but it is the most dangerous type of skin cancer because it can easily spread to other parts of the body if it is not treated early. It often develops from moles and can appear anywhere on the body.
