Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) – Your Questions Answered…
Abdominoplasty (or a ‘tummy tuck’ as we all know it) may be a major surgical procedure, but it is also one of the most popular choices for men and women seeking to get rid of fat deposits and loose abdominal skin. Sometimes, even with regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle, it feels impossible to ‘lose the belly’ – particularly for women whose abdominal muscles have separated through pregnancy and for anyone with excess skin after significant weight loss. Here at Cornerstone Clinic, our team of qualified surgeons is dedicated to helping you achieve your body goals. Let’s delve into some frequently asked questions about tummy tucks:
IS THE PROCEDURE THE SAME FOR EVERYONE?
Dr Maurizio Viel, depending on the amount of fat deposits and skin laxity, will recommend the procedure which is most appropriate. If your fat deposits are limited to the area below the navel, you might need a less complex procedure called a ‘partial abdominoplasty’ or ‘mini tummy tuck’. You might also be advised to try liposuction alone. Or maybe you’d benefit most from a complete abdominoplasty – with added liposuction.
HOW LONG IS THE PROCEDURE AND WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE?
Complete abdominoplasty usually takes between two to five hours and partial abdominoplasty between one and two hours (depending on each individual) and is carried out under general anaesthesia so you’ll sleep throughout the surgery. The procedure starts with an incision which is made from hipbone to hipbone and another incision is made to free the naval. The surgeon will work to reveal the vertical muscles in your abdomen and tighten/stitch them into a new position, which provides a firmer abdominal wall and a narrower waistline. The skin is then stretched back over the abdomen – with any extra skin removed and a new opening is made for your naval. For partial abdominoplasty, the process is similar to a complete abdominoplasty, but with a smaller incision and less extensive correction.
HOW BIG IS THE SCAR?
The scar, running from hip to hip, is strategically placed to be hidden by swimwear or underwear. It can take up to nine months for scars to flatten and lighten.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME?
The initial days can involve pain and discomfort, with swelling and limitations in movement. This is normal! Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication and provide aftercare instructions. Stitches are removed in stages, typically within a few weeks. Recovery varies, but gentle exercise aids healing. Surface stitches will be removed after five to seven days, while deeper sutures will be removed in two to three weeks.
