One of the most common surgical cosmetic operations is breast enlargement, but it’s a significant choice that needs serious thought and investigation. You might be curious about breast augmentation if you’re considering the treatment. In addition to making your cup size larger, breast enlargement can assist your breasts become more even or modify their form. Breast enlargement involves the placement of implants behind the above or below the chest muscle. During the consultation, Dr Maurizio will discuss a choice of implants but typically the ‘gummy bear implants’ are used as they contain a highly-cohesive silicon gel which remains within the casing when cut in half making it much safer. The procedure begins with the administration of anaesthesia. Surgery to expand the breasts is typically performed under sedation which is comparable to ‘twilight’ – this is not the same as general anaesthesia but you won’t be conscious during the process. Dr. Maurizio Viel will start by making incisions in the mammary fold to reduce the visibility of scars.
Next, the breast implant is placed into the pocket, which is a space above or beneath the pectoral muscle. The surgery will take between 60–90 minutes in total.

Typically, this depends on the types of implants used. The ‘gummy bear implants’ have a lifetime warranty. However, previously makes of implants have a typical shelf life of around 10 years on average. For older models of breast implants a second breast enlargement is encouraged, to replace the implant. A breast implant may need to be removed or replaced for several reasons, including:
– A rupture, which depending on the type of implant, can lead to a reduction in breast size or an uneven look
– Scar tissue hardening and causing tightness, tenderness and pain, as well as size and shape changes
– Changes in breast position, due to sagging with age or significant weight change
– Ripples or wrinkles
– Revision surgery to make breasts larger or smaller, or to remove them entirely

Some patients prefer a more natural option. Some patients prefer to use their own fat and this can be mixed with stem cells to help the fat survive better after the transplant. The great advantage is that there are no scars as the fat is injected but the disadvantage is that you can typically only go up on one cup size.

You would typically take some time off work after surgery – most patients take 2 – 4 days off work to recuperate. The entire recuperation process may take four to six weeks. You should avoid rigorous work, heavy lifting, and physical activity during this time.
The recovery timeline following Breast Enlargement looks like this:
You may recuperate in a recovery room for up to two hours after the treatment with patients returning home the same day. Your breasts may feel too sensitive or not sensitive enough, and your chest may feel constricted. You might experience some bruising or swelling, as well as fatigue and nausea. Make sure to plan for a ride from a friend or family member because you shouldn’t drive home. Your physician will provide you with a list of painkillers and antibiotics that can be taken.
You may still experience some pain at this point, but it should be minimal. You can resume your regular activities, but stay away from heavy lifting and exercise, particularly those that require you to raise your arms above your head. You will continue to adhere to the post-operative guidelines, which include massaging your breasts to ease inflammation and relax your muscles.

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, involves using implants or fat transfer to increase the size of your breasts or restore breast volume that has been lost after weight reduction or pregnancy. Typically fat only allows the increase of volume by one cup size and implants create choice for the volume.
It is placed over the muscle therefore the patient will still be able to breastfeed post-surgery.
Ideal candidates are those in good health, have realistic expectations, and wish to improve the size and shape of their breasts. It’s important for patients to discuss their medical history and goals with our plastic surgeon, Dr Maurizio Viel, to determine suitability.
The incision is about 3 to 5cm and is placed below the breast on the crease line. This area usually heals well and not obviously seen.
The breast augmentation surgery will be conducted under sedation (this is not tone confused with general anaesthesia), and it usually takes 1 to 2 hours. Sedation is a medical process used to help a patient relax, reduce stress and discomfort, and sometimes induce partial or full unconsciousness during medical procedures. Patients don’t usually have any memory of the procedure. The patient will recover in 2 to 3 hours before discharge. This also depends on how fast the recovery of the patient is.

Typically, we use the new generation of silicone implant, which is made with elastic, soft and cohesive silicone gel (There is no leakage if you cut in half). These implants now have a lifetime warranty from the manufacturers and don’t have to be changed every 10 – 15 years but you should always visit your surgeon to be assessed every few years.
It is required that the patient will bring a non-wired, cotton bra to wear post-surgery. The size depends on the increase of the breast size from the current size. Patient should wear it for 1-month post-surgery.
The first change of dressing will be done 5 days after the surgery, the second would be on the 10″ day. Stitch removal is done on the 14% day post-surgery.
The patient should come back on the first, second and third month post-surgery for follow-up appointments with the surgeon.
It can be done on the 4* or 5′” day post-surgery. However, the patient needs to make sure that the incision will not get wet.
It usually takes 5 to 7 days. They can resume to work after 1 week and can resume non-strenuous exercise 3 to 4 weeks after the surgery. The level of difficulty in exercising must be done gradually.
Travelling and swimming can be done 2 weeks post-surgery when the stitches have been removed.
Patient can drive after 4 days and no lifting heavy things or children (for moms) for 1 month.
Breast augmentation will be done in the hospital. You’ll probably go home the same day. The procedure rarely requires a hospital stay. It can be done with local or general anaesthesia, plastic surgeon will review different anaesthesia options with you.
