CHRONIC DISEASE

Patients who suffer from any chronic disease like diabetes, asthma and

hypertension often need regular reviews with their specialist physicians. In between

these appointments, the family physician can review you regularly, take blood tests

and other vital signs to ensure control of the chronic condition.

The family doctor can prescribe repeat prescriptions and take the time to discuss any questions and concerns you may have. Your family physician is also uniquely able to link medical conditions together and ensure that your treatment of one condition does not adversely affect another or your mental health.

I need medications that require blood tests before they are prescribed. Can my family doctor prescribe them?

The family doctor can orgnanise blood tests and prescribe medications after. If there are any abnormalities of the tests done they may refer you back to the specialist for further review.

My son has asthma and is not very well controlled or compliant with his medications, do I need to see the respiratory doctor everytime he gets sick?

Asthma is a common condition that your family doctor will be able to treat. They can discuss with you and your son the issues that may be affecting compliance and increase or decrease medications following the UK and USA guidelines. If there is a flare up of his asthma, your family doctor can also treat the exacerbation and monitor him once treatment has been started. You would not need to see a specialist unless your son does not respond to the treatment given.

Do I still need to see a specialist if I am under the care of a family physician?

In many cases, the family physician can diagnose, treat and follow up most common chronic conditions and specialist appointments are not required. For more complex cases or those resistant to treatment your family doctor can work in conjunction with the specialist to ensure you get the best possible treatment that works for you.
