Thyroid dysfunction refers to any condition where the thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck, doesn’t produce the right amount of hormones. These hormones (mainly T3 and T4) control metabolism, energy, and temperature regulation. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) slows these functions down, while an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) speeds them up. Both can affect everything from weight and mood to fertility and heart health.

Signs of hypothyroidism may include:

  • fatigue
  • weight gain
  • hair loss
  • dry skin
  • irregular periods
  • low mood

A thyroid-supportive diet needs to be all about balance with the right nutrients. Stress management, adequate sleep, and regular movement are crucial, as chronic stress can worsen thyroid imbalance. Supporting gut health, minimising environmental toxins, and regularly checking vitamin D and iron levels also make a difference.
