WOMEN’S HEALTH & FAMILY PLANNING

A family physician is trained in women’s health and can be an option instead of seeing a gynaecologist.
Pap smears and breast examination can be done in the clinic and maybe more convenient and
comfortable for you. They can treat a wide range of obstetric conditions and help guide you through your
pregnancy. Women have a wide range of medical conditions that are unique to them which are linked to
their menstrual cycle and family planning, all of which can be treated by your family physician.

Common conditions:

  • Antenatal care – regular follow up
  • Irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Regular screening tests such as Pap smears
  • Individualised family planning advice

I have really heavy and painful periods, can the family doctor help me?

Heavy and painful periods are a common condition that many women suffer with, often in silence. There are many causes and we can investigate fully with blood tests and ultrasound examinations. Once they have a diagnosis the doctor can discuss treatment options, start medications and follow up to make sure that treatment has helped.

I would like to discuss family planning but I do not know my options.

Family doctors can discuss all the different options of contraceptives which can include the contraceptive pill, injections, implants, patches and the IUD as well as barrier methods. They can tell you the advantages and disadvantages of the all the different types in detail and depending on the method you choose, they can start treatment. The doctor can then follow you up regularly to make sure that you are comfortable with your choice or discuss changing to a different type.
